Megan

Owner's Name: J'Mel Goode
Pet's Name: Megan Age: 3 Gender: Female

Illness
Date Diagnosed
Feline herpes virus
August 2003
Ulcerative dermatitis
August 2003

Why I think my kitty isn't eating: Megan has an upper respiratory staph infection and ulcerative dermatitis on her face and nose. The dermatitis manifests as crusty, scabby sores that completely cover her nose and block her nostrils so she can't breath through her nose. Cats who can't smell, don't eat.

After first, second and third opinions, incorrect diagnosis with accompanying wrong medications, two biopsies, etc., three weeks ago the fourth vet flushed her nose, cultured the discharge and prescribed Baytril and a topical ointment used in treating staph infections. She is finally starting to feel better, the crusts on her nose are almost gone and we're hoping she will begin eating on her own soon.

Date when assist feeding began: Sept. 12, 2003
Feeding Technique:

100% Syringe Feeding.
I use Eukanuba Max Calorie mixed with a tablespoon of baby food meat and tsp of baby food peas. This gives the food a creamier texture and the peas help with constipation. Megan weighs 6 lbs and we aim for between 90 and 120 mls 3 times a day. I wrap her in a towel and sit on the couch with her leaning on the left arm of the sofa. I use a 3ml syringe - I have to fill it constantly but the small size is easy for me to handle.

Why I've chosen to Assist Feed: I know exactly how much food Megan is eating - no guess work. Giving meds is easy - I dilute any tablets in a syringe with a little water then fill the rest of syringe with food and down the hatch! Our feeding time is also a time of bonding, petting, nuzzling and head kissing - a little time spent between just the two of us with no interruptions from other cats or the dogs.
Appetite Primer Tricks:
Food liked best: I am feeding Eukanuba Max Cal only right now because she had lost 3 lbs. I think she has gained some weight so we may branch out with some other foods. When she was well her favorite was Fancy Feast Gourmet Chicken.
Food liked least:

Baytril 11mg/sid (once per day)
Interferon 1ml/sid
Quadratop ointment 3 times daily
Interferon eye drops once daily
Idoxiuridine eye drops 5 times daily
