Hills Cat Food

Hills cat food company has a prescription food called Hills a/d Canine/Feline Critical Care. Yep, they can even use it for dogs. The food is an excellent cat food full of nutrients and calories and I have used for many years.

It is a very tasty food so most cats like it. It has a great consistency for both finger feeding and syringe feeding. When I finger feed, I just use it straight out of the can (allowed to warm up to room temperature) so that I maximize the calories my sick cat is receiving.

The food is just a little thick for regular syringe feeding so I like to use the syringes with the tapered tips like those in the Kitten Mothering Kit because I can cut the tapered tip to the exact size that allows the food to flow easily. Some people dilute the food with water so they can use the regular syringes, but that also dilutes the calories and nutrients. If your cat prefers a thinner food, diluting it may be your cat choice; just make sure to keep track of how much food your cat eats before diluting it so you know how many calories are consumed for the day.

This Hills cat food is high in calories and high in digestible proteins. If your cat has had surgery this food may have been recommended to you. Some veterinarians may say that a cat with kidney disease shouldn’t use it, but it might depends on what your cat’s blood test results are… and if you can keep the blood values close to normal with subcutaneous fluid therapy. My thoughts are that if a kitty is starving, it is better to get calories and protein in it so that it has a chance to survive, otherwise the point is mute.

This is a prescription only cat food so it is only available at vet clinics or through pet food suppliers if your veterinarian writes your pet a prescription.

It’s a great cat food so I certainly recommend it. This cat food was actually my Alexandria’s only food the last 3 months of her life. She loved it, ate it on her own most of the time and made her quality of life better.
